DIY Wavy Bed Head (Using A Blanket!)
Coming to you today with the tutorial I know you have all been waiting for, the DIY Wavy Bed Head. This would have to be one of my favourite projects to date. And I love that this bed head was made using a blanket, a BLANKET. But let's rewind for a second. We moved into our house four years ago and in our master bedroom, we have a long shelf above the bed. I've never thought a bed head would look good underneath but a while ago I started to think that maybe, just maybe, it might work. And an idea started forming - what if I could make my own? That way I knew it would be a) the perfect size, b) the perfect shape and colour, and c) not expensive. Bed heads are not cheap these days and seeing as we have a king bed, the bigger the bed the more expensive a bed head is.
As you know I have been loving all things wavy so I decided to make my own Wavy Bed Head using MDF sheets, a jigsaw, a staple gun and fabric. I had my heart set on a cream or white boucle fabric but sadly I couldn't find any. I like to shop for fabrics in person and there isn't a lot of options up here on the Sunshine Coast. I dragged the kids to Lincraft (not a good idea btw) and as I walked in happened to stumble across a table with different coloured teddy blankets. I found a beautiful cream teddy blanket and the quality looked expensive. It felt soft and fluffy, and it was the perfect colour and size so I grabbed it, and didn't let it go.
Aside from making a bed head with a blanket, this project couldn't have been easier to DIY. I've been getting really comfortable with using a jigsaw (check out my DIY Chubby Tiled Side Table, DIY Wavy Chubby Side Table, DIY Fluted Coffee Table and DIY Wavy Mirror) and I promise, once you give it a go, it's amazing how easy it is to use and how many projects become possible! For this project I've listed the materials you need below. And best of all? The total cost was only $78! And just over $100 if you don't have a jigsaw or a staple gun. So good. This is the perfect project whether you're in lockdown (thinking of you!) or not, and you can easily make it in a day. Materials
2 x 1.9m x 60cm MDF sheets from Bunnings
Pencil or pen
Ruler and measuring tape
2 clamps from Bunnings
Jigsaw from Bunnings
Jigsaw Blades from Bunnings
Staple gun from Bunnings
Batting cut to size from Lincraft (don't purchase pre-cut rolls as they are cost more)
Teddy blanket from Lincraft or fabric of your choice
Optional: Hand held sander from Bunnings (refer to Step 2)
Measurements
The bed head I created is 1.9m long and 1.2m high.
The dips between the waves are roughly 10cm. I didn't want to lose too much height between the waves, so that's as far as I went.
If you would like your bed head to be shorter, you can cut it to size using your jigsaw. If you'd like your bed head to be higher/taller you will need to pick up another MDF sheet.
If you'd like your bed head to be longer, Bunnings do have MDF sheets that are 2.4m long.
Steps
Draw the waves along the length of one MDF sheet using a pencil. I used a measuring tape and a ruler to help me measure three organic but fairly symmetrical waves, which you can see in these videos here.
Clamp the MDF sheet to a table and cut the wavy edge using the jigsaw. If you feel the waves are a little wobbly, go over the waves again with the jigsaw or use a hand held sander to smooth them out.
Line the two sheets of MDF together and staple them together along the top at approximately 1cm apart for extra durability. You will need someone to help you flip the bed head over, and then staple along the top of the other side. I also stapled the sides of the sheets too.
Lay the blanket (facing down) on a table. Lay the batting on top of the blanket. And then lay the bed head on top.
Working your way from the bottom two corners staple the batting to the back of the bed head. When you reach the waves, you may need to cut the batting to it sits perfectly. Refer to these videos here to see how it's done.
Repeat with the teddy blanket. You may need to cut off excess batting and fabric so the back of the bed head.
