Upcycled Plant Potting Station

Garden maintenance is going to be so easy now!

We recently mulched our garden and it’s looking incredible to say the least. The kids really enjoyed playing amongst the huge piles of mulch, Jason and my father in law also planted some new natives including a beautiful pink Eucalyptus Summer Glory - and it got me thinking. We typically use the huge table on our back deck for getting ready to plant and repot, but a potting station in the garden with all the tools in one place would be so convenient for everyone to use and enjoy.

A couple of years ago we bought a wooden work bench to use around our fire pit area, but we’ve got other plans for that area so I knew it would be perfect! I also wanted to keep this project as simple and fuss free as possible, so I decided to use Rust Oleum spray paint for it’s quality, quick drying and convenience - not a paint brush or bucket of water in sight. And in paying homage to my favourite colours, I decided to paint the work bench with Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matt Paint in Blush Pink, which looks beautiful in our garden. I also decided to spray paint our gardening tools with Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover in Gloss White and then I sealed the paint using Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel, to protect them from corroding, chipping or tarnishing.

Read on to find out how you can make your own DIY Plant Potting Station. And don’t worry if you don’t have your own bench to start with like I did, you can make one yourself using this tutorial or you can source a timber bench from your local tip shop and charity stores, or from FB Marketplace like we did.

How To

I started this project by cleaning down our old timber table with a dustpan brush because it had lots of leaves, dust and cobwebs on it. Following this I used 2 cans of Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matt Paint in Blush Pink to paint over the timber.

Following this I decided to spray the silver parts on our gardening trowel, gardening fork, kids gardening trowels, bucket and watering can using Rust-Oleum 2X Ultra Cover in Gloss White. Because I wanted to keep the timber handles on the gardening tools, I covered them each with a plastic freezer bag and painters tape, and then I spray painted them. Once the paint had completely dried, I sprayed the painted surfaces with Rust-Oleum Crystal Clear Enamel, which will protect the paint. When dried, I removed the plastic bags and painters tape.

I wanted to hang our gardening tools so I installed two brass cup hooks underneath the tabletop using my drill and a small drill bit. It was as easy as making a pilot hole and twisting the cup hooks into the holes, then hanging my tools. And that’s it!

Ta daaaa!

I couldn’t think of a better way to kick off my first project for 2023 than with this Upcycled Plant Potting Station. I had been searching high and low for the perfect table and when I realised we had a timber bench sitting our fire pit area that we weren’t using, I knew it would be perfect to transform and upcycle into a potting station! I wanted to keep this project as fun and simple as possible, without the fuss of paint brushes and buckets filled with water, so using Rust-Oleums spray paint range made this project so simple and so quick to execute. I couldn’t be happier, and I hope this project has inspired you to make your own Upcycled Plant Potting Station this summer.

This project is in collaboration with Rust-Oleum Australia
