How To Make: DIY Wavy Duo Placemats
I have been lusting over Sarah Espeute’s stitched table runners, placemats and tablecloths for a long time and ever since I stumbled across her Instagram account, I have been wanting to make a beautiful table setting inspired by her. When I found out my sister and her husband were coming over for lunch this weekend, I knew it would be the perfect opportunity to make a set of duo placemats. It’s no secret I love all things wavy and I decided to use these as my main inspiration to create my own hand stitched wavy duo placemats for our table. As luck would have it, Lincraft are having a 40% OFF Storewide Sale until Friday 22nd April, 2022 so I decided to make the most of it and stock up on linen and supplies for this project. I wanted to make a tablecloth and two duo placemat runners, but I didn’t have a lot of time (thanks to those last minute plans) nor did I want to use my sewing machine, so I came up with a quick hack to cut the making time in half. Read on to find out how I made my DIY Wavy Duo Placemats! And make sure you watch this video to see how this DIY came together.
Materials
Two different coloured linens - I chose green and dusty pink and got 2.5m of each.
Pearl cotton thread (I used 3 and still had quite a bit leftover)
Pencil or fabric pencil
Scissors
Dining plate
Iron
How To
Start by measuring and cutting your tablecloth and duo placemat runners; my placemat runner measured 1.6m x 65cm. Fold down the hems and iron the hems flat to get sharp hem creases. Apply the double sided hemming tape underneath the hems of the tablecloth and duo placemat runners. Iron the tablecloth and set on the table.
Position the duo placemats onto your table. Put a dining plate face down onto the fabric and draw a wavy outline around the plate a couple of inches away from the edge of the plate. You want the wavy outline to be wider than the plate. Repeat until you have drawn 4 wavy placemats.
Thread the cotton onto a needle and tie a double knot at the end. Hand sew directly on top of the wavy outline you have just drawn. I found sewing larger stitches, approximately 1cm over and under makes the task go faster, and I sewed all four placemats while binging on a couple of episodes of Bridgerton. When you are finished sewing, iron the placemats and place them onto the table. Add cutlery, plates and a gorgeous centrepiece.
Ta daaaa! A beautiful hand stitched table setting that will wow your guests.
This is the perfect project if you want to elevate your table setting, but don’t have a lot of time on your hands. The placemats are totally washable and you can get as creative as you like and sew cutlery, vases, plates, bread, cheese - the options are limitless. You could even use different coloured thread or even wool! I hope you enjoyed this little project because it brought me so much joy! And to see how it all came together on the day, take a look at this little video I made.
This project is in collaboration with Lincraft, I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did :)
