DIY Basket Wall Sconces

It was time to give our bedroom a refresh and I have been feeling inspired to do so for two main reasons. The first, I recently got new bedding from Ecosa. Normally I opt for khaki greens and warm rust tones, but this time I was looking for a fresh change so I chose white Flax Linen from their bedding range, and it feels and looks incredible. The second reason is because the weather where I live has been gloomy for weeks. Non stop rain, grey cloudy skies and to top it off, it hasn’t been cold at all which is odd because we are in autumn right now. Anyway, I felt prompted to give our bedroom a refresh and once I had, something wasn’t right.

I realised it was the DIY Wavy Wall Sconces I made last year; the terracotta vibes weren’t fitting in with the rest of the refreshed space so I knew I had to switch them out. I didn’t want to go out and buy more, so I decided to see what I had at home. At the back of one of my craft boxes I found two baskets I remembered picking up at a charity store for $1 each and I knew these would be perfect to make my own Basket Wall Sconces. And here we are. This is the easiest and fastest DIY I have done in ages! And you can easily replicate it with any flat baskets you can get your hands on. And it cost me zero dollars because I had all the materials I needed at home, but if you need to shop the materials (minus the baskets) it will only cost under $30! Read on to learn how to make your very own DIY Basket Wall Sconces.

Project Details

🕒 Project Time Estimate: 10 minutes of making and at least 3 hours for the glue to set, and 24 hours to completely dry.

💰 Materials Cost: Under $30 (not including the baskets)

👷‍♀️ Skill Level: Beginner DIYer

Materials

  • Two flat baskets (or you could use woven placemats!)

  • Puck lights from Bunnings

  • 3M Command Strips from Bunnings

  • Selley’s Clear Liquid Nails from Bunnings

How To

Start by cleaning the wall you want to place the wall sconces onto using warm water and a cloth. I took the Wavy Wall Sconces off and I’ll be putting them in Celeste’s room.

Next, place a 3M removable strip onto the back of each puck light - don’t remove the sticker on the wall side of the strip just yet! Decide which side of the basket you would like to face forward (the side you till see). Place a dollop of glue onto the middle of the basket (the back) and place the puck light on top - light facing down (not up!). Gently push the puck light onto the basket and allow the glue to cure for 5 to 10 minutes. Note that you should be able to reposition the puck light if you want for 20mins before the glue really starts to settle in. Allow the glue to set for at least 24 hours (I cheated and waited just a couple of hours but it was fine).

Remove the wall side sticker off the strip and firmly push it onto the wall. Hold you hand there for a few seconds - no doubt the puck light will switch on. That’s good as it shows you how easily it is to turn it on and off. And that’s it!

Ta daaaa! These DIY Basket Wall Sconces only take a few minutes make and they look good anywhere.

These simple projects that don’t take a lot of time, or cost through the roof in materials, or require any special skills are the ones that bring so much joy and satisfaction. And these DIY Basket Wall Scones are one of those projects. I am honestly so surprised with how they look. I wasn’t sure if they would look bespoke enough, but they do and I genuinely believe they will elevate any room in your home. I think what I love most is that the puck light shines through the basket, allowing for more light to shine through and light up your space at home.
