Upcycled Fabric Planters

What do you do when you find a bunch of dirty, unloved planters? You upcycle them and make a stunning centrepiece for your table!

We have friends coming over for dinner tonight and I decided to visit my favourite secondhand stores to see if I could find something unique to make a centrepiece for our table a few weeks ago. I was walking towards a pile of timber when I got distracted by two large bins filled with planters. A black curvy pot caught my attention, but out of the corner of my eye I saw some dirty white planters stacked on top of each other. I knew they had potential so I grabbed them straight away. A luck would have it, Lincraft is having a Storewide Sale until Sunday 26th June, 2022 so I decided to head up to the Lincraft store in Gympie this morning to pick up the materials I needed for an upcycle I have had on my mind for ages - Upcycled Fabric Planters! And as they say, the rest is history. Read on to find out how you can upcycle your own unwanted and unloved planters with fabric and glue, and make a stunning centrepiece for your table. And watch this video to see how it all came together, it was so much fun!

Before & After

Project Details

🕒 Project Time Estimate: 1 hour

💰 Materials Cost: $65 for the fabric, brush set and glue

⚒️ Tools: Scissors

👷‍♀️ Skill Level: Beginner DIYer

Materials

VIP: This upcycle works best if the plant pots are straight along the edges. If they’re curvy, it may be a little more challenging.

How To

Start by laying your fabric on a flat surface, pattern face side down. Place your empty plant pot on it’s side and slowly roll it from left to right and follow its path of the bottom edge with a pencil/fabric marker as you roll. Repeat for the top of the plant pot. Add two inches to both the top, bottom and sides to allow for folding underneath and on the inside of the pot. Cut out the arch with a pair of scissors.

Coat the exterior of the planter with a generous amount of Modge Podge (linked above). Roll the pot over the fabric and slowly press and tighten the fabric as you roll the planter back over the fabric until the planter is fully wrapped.

Trim and glue the seam down, then cut and glue down the excess fabric underneath and inside the planter. Fill each pot with a beautiful plant and add soil if required, carefully dust off any soil particles that may be on the fabric, and place them down your table to create a stunning centrepiece.

Ta daaaa! A stunning upcycled centrepiece for your table using planters that could have ended up in landfill.

Wow, what a statement! These Upcycled Fabric Planters look so beautiful on our table. Choosing different fabrics in 3 complimentary colours (pink, cream and green) and various patterns brought the whole look together. Often my projects can take a bit of time but I was so impressed that this only took an hour - if that! And best of all? By using secondhand planters, I’ve been able to stop more plastic from ending up in landfill. And that’s feels great!

This upcycle project is in collaboration with Lincraft.
