DIY Sculptural Candle Holders
Turning trash into…treasure!
I did a big clear out of my studio a few days ago and found lots of scrap materials aka rubbish, including cardboard tubes, styrofoam, cardboard and…toilet rolls. I thought about taking the rubbish to my local council tip for recycling but decided to make candle holders instead using my favourite RYOBI tools.

Before & After

♻️ Upcycling: Sculptural Candle Holders using rubbish
🕒 Project Time Estimate: 2 hours (not including paint or plaster drying time)
🪑 Skill Level: Beginner
💰 Materials Cost: $0 because I already had everything I needed in my studio
👷🏼♀️ Safety Gear: Face mask, safety eyewear, ear plugs and latex gloves
Materials
Cardboard tubes
Styrofoam
Coaster
Painters tape
Multi-purpose joint compound
Paint brush
Paint
Tools
Clamps
120 grit sandpaper sheet
Spade bit
Plastic joint knife (for plaster application)
How To
Step 1: I sketched 3 different sculptural candle holder designs, which I wanted to create using the rubbish I found in. my studio. I gathered my materials and started cutting, assembling and gluing the pieces together to make 3 candle holders.
Step 2: I covered each candle holder in a thick coat of plaster using the joint knife and set them aside to completely dry overnight. Following this I sanded the plaster smooth and painted each one a different colour using paint I already had in my studio.
Ta daaa!
Honestly, you would have no idea these candle holders were made from rubbish. A little delulu? Yes but in the name of trash-to-treasure, this upcycling project proves that DIY doesn’t have to look cheap. And it will never cease to amaze me what you can make using materials you would have ordinarily thrown in the bin.
