DIY Wavy Chubby Side Table
The DIY Wavy Chubby Table - it's finally here! If you've been following along over on Instagram, then you'll know I have been busy working on two DIY Chubby Tables using MDF sheets and PVC pipes! This is a project I have been wanting to do for so long and have been figuring out the process in my mind for months. The problem solving aspect is one of the biggest reasons why I love DIY projects. For this project I drew inspiration from this side table I saw in a magazine, and then I finally set out to make it my own. I have also been inspired by wavy design and I knew I wanted to create a wavy tabletop. I have also even very inspired by this photo afriend shared on Instagram and my mind was set, I wanted to paint the legs differently from the tabletop and use COLOUR. Uh huh, that's right. Colour. Not my usual vibe but our living area is very minimalist and I wanted to create something fun and bright for a change. And as they say, the rest is history. Read on to find out how I made my very own DIY Wavy Chubby Side Table.
Materials
Pencil
1 sheet of MDF
2 clamps - available from Bunnings
3 PVC pipe legs, cut to the height you desire (mine was 50cm)
Jigsaw - available from Bunnings
Powerful All Purpose Jigsaw Blade 24TPI - available from Bunnings
Hand held electric sander - available from Bunnings
White primer paint
Paint brush
Microfibre paint roller - available from Bunnings
"Sweet Caress" from British Paints - available at Bunnings
"Highland Green" from Taubmans - available from Bunnings
Rust-Oleum Clear Gloss Spray - available from Bunnings
Pencil
Selley’s Liquid Nails - available at Bunnings
Extra Tips:
You can get PVC pipes cut at Bunnings (if you buy them there); they'll cut the pipes with a handsaw. They will most definitely not be cut accurately across the pieces (it's virtually impossible and that's totally ok) so you could consider sanding the top of the PVC pipes down until they are even in height.
You will need to buy clamps to fasten down the MDF sheet to a table so it's stable when you cut it with a jigsaw.
I always use Lexicon Quarter by Dulux as my primer paint, which is available at Bunnings.
One coat of the Rust-Oleum Clear Gloss Spray is plenty, but you can spray two coats if you would like the finish to be ultra glossy.
How To
Draw a wavy shape on top of the MDF. Cut it out using a jigsaw and smooth the edges with an electric hand sander.
Paint the wavy tabletop (both sides) and PVC pipes with 2 coats of white primer using a paint brush. Set aside to dry in between coats.
Paint the tabletop with 2 coats of "Sweet Caress" using a paint brush on both sides. Set aside to dry in between coats. Paint final coat using the microfibre roller on both sides. Set aside to dry.
Paint the PVC pipes with 3 coats of "Highland Green" using a paint brush. Set aside to dry in between coats.
Spray the tabletop and the PVC legs with clear gloss spray. Set aside to dry.
Position the legs underneath the tabletop then mark them out using a pencil.
One at a time, squeeze the glue directly onto the underside of the table (where you marked out the positioning of the PVC pipes) and firmly place the PVC pipes on top. Leave it to dry for 24 hours. Do not be tempted to move the table before then!
And that's it!
I absolutely loved working on this project. There's nothing better than making a piece of furniture from scratch using creativity and a little elbow grease. I love that the pink and green has given our fairly minimalist living space a bright pop of colour that also compliments the original piece of art by Stan Piechaczek, which we bought as a house warming gift to ourselves. Ahhh the time before we had kids and lots of disposable income lol.
