DIY Christmas Ornaments: Folded Paper Circle

This year I was really inspired to use paper to make all of our DIY Christmas ornaments. It's so magical about using an everyday item such as paper and transforming it into something beautiful. That's why I am excited to show you how to make your very own Folded Paper Circle Christmas ornament! After seeing in a magazine some paper folded ornaments using wrapping paper, I knew I had to give it a try and put my own spin on it. Last year I bought two All Wrapped Up wrapping paper books from Berkelouw Bookstore in Eumundi. The prints in each book are designed by artists Edith Rewa and the other is by Alice Oehr, and they each have a really strong Australiana theme - my fave. I knew these beautiful pieces of wrapping paper would be perfect to try my hand at folded paper Christmas tree ornaments! Read on to find out how you can make your very own Folded Paper Circle ornaments.

Materials

  • Wrapping paper in your colour/design of choice

  • Scissors

  • Hot glue gun

  • Raffia

How To

1. Cut out two rectangles with a width of at least 10cm and a length of at least 20cm in length.

2. Fold accordion pleats with each rectangle and aim for at least 5 to 7 pleats per sheet and fold the pleats as small or as wide as you like. I like each pleat to be approximately 1cm to 1.5cm wide. Trim excess paper off with scissors. Fold each piece in half and glue the middle sections together.

3. Glue the two pieces of folded paper (semi-circles) together. This will reveal the folded circle shape.

4. Hand cut a small circle from the left over paper. Don't worry too much about the size but at least 1cm wide is preferable. Place a blog of hot glue in the middle of the folded circle. Press the piece of circle paper on top.

5. Punch a hole through the top of the folded paper ornaments and thread a piece of raffia through. Tie the raffia ends in a double knot and cut of any excess raffia.

Ta daaaa! Happy Christmas!

As you can see, folded paper ornaments are just beautiful and they are so easy to make. I love that they require only a few materials and you can use any paper you like! Originally I was going to make my folded paper ornaments using kraft paper and paper bags, but I am so happy I came across the idea to use wrapping paper in a magazine. So clever! And it's made me even happier to be able to bring this simple to execute DIY to you. Happy making and Merry Christmas!
